Figurative altar candlestick made of carved, painted, and partially gilded wood: a praying angel with folded hands and a golden robe stands on a rocaille-decorated base with an angel’s head. Above is a turned stem with a chalice-shaped spout and a toothed green glass drip tray. Probably Southern Germany/Alpine region, late 18th/early 19th century.

Angel Chandelier
From an art historical perspective, the small head in the base is that of an angel or cherub in clouds. Such „angel heads“ have been a typical motif in church furnishings since the Baroque and Rococo periods: they mark the celestial sphere and make the object above it—in this case, the chandelier with the angel—seem to rise from a cloud or angelic glory. The head in the base thus emphasizes that the entire chandelier is to be understood as a bearer of divine light and iconographically belongs to the realm of angels and the afterlife.
