Art Nouveau marble column circa 1900

Art Nouveau column

Circa 1900.

A rounded stem crafted from vividly veined Lumachella (fossilized marble), with a base and abacus in warm Rosso marble. It is accented by delicate brass rings. An elegant display stand for bronzes, busts, or vases—a decorative original from the Belle Époque.

A wonderful pedestal for sculptures, vases, objects, or lamps.

Height: 102 cm | Width: 19 cm | Depth: 19 cm

Display/sculpture column, circa 1895–1915 (Art Nouveau/Late Historicism).

Slender, twisted round shaft on a square base with a square capstone (“abacus”) and a simple, chalice-shaped capital. It’s a classic motif, but without excessive ornamentation → typical of circa 1900.

Material mix: The shaft appears to be made of Lumachella (shell marble/fossil marble). It has a dark brown to almost black base with clearly visible, light-colored shell/fossil fragments. The base, capital, and capstone are made of a reddish-brown marble (probably Rosso Levanto or Adnet Red). The narrow connecting rings are patinated brass. This is a detail frequently found on columns from around 1900.

Use: Such columns stood in salons and entrance halls to display bronzes, busts, vases, or planters. They were often sold in pairs.

Probable Origin

Made in a stonemasonry/marble workshop in Northern Italy, Austria (Vienna area), or Southern Germany

This marble collumn is just as beautiful as this Art Deco column circa 1930.
